ATA, what about taking a filter. I use the Katadyn micro hiker and at 8 oz it does an incredible job. It is just not very fast. I would think that you would have access to water that you are able to filter.

Hi thanks for taking the time to answer my post, I don't see many people chatting too often in this web.

Well when I hike in FL I do it mostly in the Everglades or Big Cypress and the water you will find it is not safe to drink so I have to take 10 to 12 bottles of bater with me for my personal use, since you are most of the time under 105f to 115F heat and humidity!!!

ATA why is water a problem in FL?
Ata Comment by Ata on August 6, 2009 at 2:06pm
I am glad to see a group like this one, since most of the time I go out with about 40lbs to 45lbs on my back most of it's water since that is a big problem on FL when you hike, so if any one has any ideas I will be glad to take notes thanks

Yeah, I started off the A.T. with some Golites that had no shank support at all and my feet were dying. I switched to some Montrails which do have shank support and noticed a consideralble difference. I can only speak for the AT really....it was pretty brutal in spots, especially PA. I do agree that BOOTs are not necessary and I will always wear shoes to hike in.

Gabriel,

I have never considered the shank in my shoes unless I am doing serious climbing. I generally use running shoes for most of my hikes and scrambles. This tends to keep the weight down but you are right at times I wish I had a stiffer shoe. Hard to find the right compromise.

Da,

I liked the comment about the bag. I usually use a quilt and take along insulating clothing that can be work in camp, at belays and other stops and also extend the range of the bag. By using them for multiple purposes I keep my weight down and still am comfortable.
