He's a Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum). Mostly found in the eastern part of Idaho. There is a similar looking salamander, the Idaho Giant Salamander, that is found in the northern part of the state. It was likely aestivating (winter sleep) underground. This salamander is in the same genus as the Spotted Salamanders that are found in the vernal pools in the Smokies. Cool critter!

julie, this might be a species of salamander native to idaho, appropriately named, " idaho giant salamander ". either way neat picture ! you just never know what critter you'll find in idaho. one of the reasons i like living here !
