HI Jerry ! I wondered why you havent responded to me so came to your page to ck. on you and lo & behold you left me a message on your page. Hoe about hitting my page so i dont get lost. Thanks for all that good imfo. Let me know how you come out on the permits. I will hike part of the John M. in Yosemite to tol. Weather permit. Don"t know if cables will be up at Half Dome or not. Have B/C permits for 16-21, can only hope. Also are you the same Jerry Wells that post on Ultra Lite Site? Sounds like you with your packs & bad back!! Hike Safe.
Hi, Ray......well, right now our Whitney trip is "tentative" because we didn't get slots in the initial lottery..we're hoping to pick up one of the remaining slots which are available to those lucky enough to call in or fax requests at just the right time....this past Wed. they were open for July trips, this coming Wed for trips thru August and the next Wed thru Sept.....October is still wide open, but the weather gets iffy that late in the season.....Mt. Whitney is near Lone Pine which is not near anywhere.....there may be a small local airport in Bishop to service Mammoth Mountain ski area, but I'm not sure....there are no large airports within several hours of Lone Pine.....Bakersfield is about 2-3 hours away, so a rental car to Whitney Portal would be necessary......and the toilet facilities have been closed on Whitney for a couple years....you need to carry EVERYTHING out that you took in...including, uh, your recycled food.....since there is no place to even dig a hole near Trail Camp, the rangers want you to even take out #1 in the "wag bags" they provide....essentially kitty litter in double garbage bags....though Whitney is impacted, there are several great hikes in the general area, including Mt. Langley, which Backpacker Magazine noted as one of 10 great alternatives to other, more famous but highly-used trails....I've done that trail, too, and it's beautiful. Mt. Whitney can also be approached from other directions which aren't subject to the lottery, including from the same campground where the Mt. Langley trail begins--Horseshoe Meadows. BUT, it's a much longer hike that way--at least a week would be needed, probably more..I met someone just yesterday who'd gone that route and taken 9 days to do it....or the John Muir Trail out of Sequoia is another long alternative.....Backpacker called it the most beautiful trail in the Lower 48...it's awe inspiring...but again, loooooong.
Hello Jerry! I checked out MT. Whitney Looked like a great Hike also saw they are shutting down toilet facitily; truly carry out allyou carry in Where do you trail head. Do you fly in ,What airport Etc Cant promise anything but am interested! I will want to do some other hikes while i am ther. Maby spend a couple weeks.
5 of us hiked Whitney last summer.....and only the youngest, fittest of our group suffered significantly from altitude sickness..and she'd had a migraine before we started.....we all went on a diamox regimen for the trip, which probably helped. You have to get your doc to prescribe it and you start taking them about 3 days before you start up. The gear is pretty much your standard backpacking stuff.....if it's early or late season you also have to take into account possible snow....we hope to avoid snow. I can write more later...kind of rushed this morning. On Whitney we broke it up into 3 days of 6, 10 and 6 miles.....many try to do it in one day; less than half make it. The way we did it made it eminently doable....
