Ray, I just joined and have been looking at all photos and came across yours. I really like them, makes me want to go there again. I was there once in the winter time,1978 I think.

Ray,
we went to the Big Island and Maui in October 2000 - we mostly did the usual touristy stuff there, although we did do quite a few short hikes (we had our 4year old son with us so that limited us a bit). If you ever make it to the Big Island or Maui: in Hawaii Volcanoes NP: where the Chain of Craters Road ends because of the lava flow, we hiked on the lava for a couple of miles closer to where the active lava flow was. There are plenty of hiking trails around the rim and in the Kau Desert and Hilina Pali areas. If I ever make it back to the Big Island, I'll certainly hike the Mauna Loa trail all the way to the top (4 days return trip) or the Mauna Kea.
In Maui, we hiked a couple of short trails in Haleakala NP - there are several longer trails there as well inside the crater. And of course, along the road to Hana (spectacular!) there's plenty opportunity for short hikes.
Happy Hiking!
Christophe.

OK - So your second island will be Oahu (Honolulu in on Oahu.) On Oahu I recommend the Nu'uanu-Judd trail for a great short hike. If you are staying around Waikiki its a 15 minute drive away. Manoa valley is also close and has some beautiful hikes. Many tourists just stay in Waikiki which is unfortunate because its the most commercial and generally crappy part of the island.

Ray, the average high/low temp in January for CanyonLand is 44/22 and snow will not be an issue. Keep me advised of your schedule to Yosemite, you never know I may be able work it in. Your 12 week tour sounds like the dream trip.

Ray, first off thanks for the friends request. I see you got your slide show set up already, awesome pics. As far as RMNP goes, if your going to be there in June, I would recommend something around the Bear Lake area. It's low enough most of the snow will be gone, and it gives you several different loops/trails to choose from depending on the time and distance you want to cover. The maps and trail info are great there for planning. Several trails have some really nice falls and there is plenty of water in the area. I hate packing water! Take advantage of the shuttle service there, it is great. Bear lake is a huge day hike area and the parking lot is full most of the time. You can pick up your permit from one of the visitor centers and shuttle in leaving your car in the VC parking lot. Much more secure.
As far as the tetons go, paintbrush and cascade canyons shouldn't be missed if you have the time. They do interconnect to make a loop if you have the time. We did it in 5 days, but we weren't pushing hard at all. Enjoy the views. If your time is limited you can base camp at Phelps lake and day hike into different areas as well, but you'll tend to see more people. I hear the Teton Crest trail is really cool, but have never been on it myself.
That's my suggestions in a nut shell, hope it helps some.
